How Coronavirus Can Impact Your eye

Research has revealed that coronavirus can spread through the eyes, same it can through the mouth or the nose.

Now that we know coronavirus can be passed through tiny droplets left in the air after someone coughs, sneezes, or even talks – the likelihood of inhaling the droplets is substantially higher than absorption through the eye. However, it is important to appreciate that you can also become infected by touching your eyes after touching an object that has the virus on it.

This does not mean if you have pink eye that you should panic.

It might be possible for coronavirus to cause a pink eye infection (conjunctivitis), but this is rare. Pink eye is caused by a virus or bacteria. It can spread if someone touches the discharge from the eyes, or objects contaminated by the discharge. Wash and sanitize your hands frequently, and do not share towels, cups or utensils with others.

Although rare, the coronavirus can invade the conjunctiva, which might, in turn, serve as a source of its spread throughout your body. Therefore, early detection is paramount to stop it’s spread. Symptoms include, itchiness, burning, redness in the white of the eye, swollen conjunctiva, excessive tearing, a thick yellow discharge – especially after sleep, and blurred vision. If you are experiencing symptoms of pink eye, contact your ophthalmologist.
