What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding and thickening of the natural lens of the eye and is part of the aging process, developing gradually over time. This thickening causes the lens to become cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing some loss of vision.

THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF CATARACTS

  • Nuclear Sclerosis and Cortical Cataracts. These are the most common type of cataract, which develops as a result of aging.
  • Congenital cataracts. Babies are sometimes born with cataracts as a result of an infection, injury, or poor development before they were born, or they may develop during childhood
  •  Secondary cataracts. These develop as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes, or exposure to toxic substances, certain drugs (such as corticosteroids or diuretics), ultraviolet light, or radiation.
  • Traumatic cataracts. These form after injury to the eye, either rapidly or in a delayed manner.

THE PROGRESSION OF CATARACT SYMPTOMS

  • Vision that becomes cloudy, blurry or foggy.
  • More difficulty seeing at night or in low light
  • Glare from oncoming headlights when driving at night
  • Colors that appear faded, or changes in the way one sees colors, also the yellowing of vision.
  • Sudden change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription
  • Difficulty reading fine print
